BEHIND THE ROUND
A little more about this quiz
Guide words show a page’s first and last entries. Compare a target with both endpoints before deciding whether that page is a useful place to look.
These short original page ranges practice shared beginnings and boundary cases. The explanation identifies the first useful difference rather than asking you to guess from the first letter alone.
LEARN THE PATTERN
How to practice dictionary guide words
Use original mini-dictionary headers to find words, choose pages and compare shared prefixes. The bank has 30 explained questions; a mixed round draws ten.
Dictionary guide words reference
Plain English alphabetical-order practice using invented page ranges. Include the first and last entry. Accents, punctuation, abbreviations and specialist dictionary filing conventions are outside this bank.
| Task | Example | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Check a page range | basket — beacon; target battery | The target lies after the first entry and before the last |
| Include endpoints | globe — grain; target grain | The last guide word names an entry on the page |
| Compare a shared beginning | steam before steel | After ste, a comes before e |
| Compare a complete prefix | car before card | The complete shorter word precedes its extension |
| Move to an earlier page | peach before pearl — pepper | At the first difference after pea, c comes before r |
Read each question’s stated scope and key before answering.

Check what you remember
Look away from the table. Try each question, then open it to check your answer.
Are the guide words themselves excluded from the page?Show answer
No. They identify its first and last entries.
What do you do when the first letters match?Show answer
Continue until a letter differs or one whole word ends.
Check both ends of the range
A target can belong to the page when it falls from the first entry through the last, including the endpoints. A word before the first endpoint needs an earlier page; a word after the last needs a later one.
Continue through shared letters
When words start alike, move to the next different letter. A complete shorter word comes before a longer word extending the same letters, as car comes before card. Word length alone does not determine order.
Use the three practice sets
The first ten questions pick a word inside a range. The next ten choose a suitable page. The last ten test endpoints, prefixes and the reading method. A printed set can become a partner activity: one player names the deciding letter while the other checks the answer key.
